Patent for Dark Omen 3D-Banner-Positioning

Just remembered something: olly(?) found some years ago a patent by EA that sounded like the 3D-Positioning in e.g. Dark Omen (at the corner to represent where the unit is). But finding the link could be difficult ;). But I think that it was in a Company of Heroes discussion where I complained that there is no way to easily find out the position of a unit. --Ghabry 12:02, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

ok found it Link To Patent. According to the PDF it's seams to be invented by Square Enix but is used in Dark Omen according to the references. But based on the graphics it looks more like a Ring menu to select items (like in Secret of Mana but a bit more in Z-direction (i know that this game is older then 2003)) --Ghabry 12:12, 18 March 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, we talked about that earlier, as I recall, and I was afraid that EA had patented the screen-hugging unit indicators (unit banners) of Dark Omen style. But then f.i. XIII Century, which is a AAA fully commercial game, uses it, and I also guess that such a patent would be practically unenforceable. In fact, I can't really remember anyone suing over user interfaces any longer. Apple lost to MS a while ago, radial interfaces have been a staple alternative in browsers for close to ten years, etc etc. Mikademus 22:35, 18 March 2010 (UTC)
